Garden Sanctuary: Visions of Australian Flora is showing now at WAMA, and original works from all four artists are available to purchase directly through this shop.
Dolores Skowronski-Malloni’s botanical illustrations, worked in fine watercolour pencil and paint, document native flora across the Grampians/Gariwerd region, from her Endemic Grevillea Collection to her studies of terrestrial orchids and understorey natives. Each piece is a close, scientifically grounded record of a plant most people will never see in flower.
Mark Dober’s large-scale watercolour and gouache paintings are made entirely en plein air around Castlemaine, built up over several days on site as the light and weather shift. Four major works from the exhibition are available, each a direct response to a specific creek, river or lake.
Samuel Mulcahy welds his sculptures from salvaged steel, brass, copper and aluminium into Tetnesteii, his own invented botanical genus. Every piece is one of a kind, built from materials reclaimed from construction sites.
Qun Zhang paints homes and gardens across regional Victoria and Melbourne’s suburbs in watercolour and ink, using the flattened perspective of Chinese scroll painting to turn each property into a dense, searchable world.
Please note that not every work in the exhibition is for sale. Some pieces are on loan from private collections, and others, including Skowronski-Malloni’s Endemic Grevillea Collection, have been donated to WAMA’s permanent holdings. Available works are marked accordingly below.
Rod Moss has kindly donated his work Elsewhere You Looked When Blood Stained Our Maps and Soaked Our Soil to help raise funds for WAMA Foundation. This work is currently display at Front of House in WAMA’s reception area.
