The Wisdom of Fungi
WAMA Foundation presents a free National Science Week event exploring the fascinating world of fungi with community educator and mycelial mentor Feresh Pizarro. Through an engaging presentation and guided fungi walk, participants will discover how fungi shape ecosystems, support cycles of renewal, and invite us to think differently about connection, collaboration and care for place.
The session will introduce the hidden networks beneath our feet, with Feresh sharing stories and insights into fungal ecology, identification (including poisons species), and the vital role fungi play in life, death and regeneration.
The workshop will be held on Saturday 15 August from 11am to 1pm this all-ages event will take place in the MPR Room and across the grounds of WAMA Foundation, Halls Gap. Please book your place via the link on our website.
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
Feresh will explore the intelligence and ecological importance of fungi, from mycelial networks and nutrient cycling to the ways fungi can teach us about interconnectedness, collective repair, and our own inner ecology.
Participants will be invited to look closely and notice the fungal life that is present across the WAMA grounds. This outdoor component will introduce basic observation and identification principles, including awareness of poisonous species, while encouraging deeper relationships with local ecosystems.
Feresh Pizarro is the founder of South Spore, a grassroots fungi education and sustainability enterprise in South Australia. Living off-grid on a mushroom farm on the Limestone Coast, she brings together more than two decades of education experience with a deep passion for mycology, regenerative systems and community learning. Through workshops, storytelling and hands-on encounters with fungi, Feresh invites people to reconnect with the living world and see fungi as powerful teachers of renewal, resilience and interconnection.
